I've lived on Islay all my life. I started to do cross-stitch as a hobby and have been doing it for many years. I make up some of my own designs and sell the most popular ones as kits. I took up the pressed flower art several years ago when a wrist injury prevent me from doing my cross-stitch.
For my cross-stitch, I use 16 or 18 count Aida fabric with embroidery floss. These are the same materials I use in my kits.
The pressed flowers and seaweed are done in a microwave, a tricky process as it is easy to burn them. The flowers are all picked on Islay. The seaweed is also gathered from Islay beaches, then washed, teased and pressed.
I sell cross-stitch pictures, including my own designs. I also sell kits of my Islay cross-stitch designs for other embroiderers to enjoy. I sell pressed flower pictures, fridge magnets, bookmarks and notebooks. I also sell seaweed pictures, coasters, fridge magnets, bookmarks and notebooks.
I attend both the Port Ellen and Bruichladdich Craft Markets.
